In October, Year 6 visited Beamish as part of our history curriculum. We discovered how medicine, dentistry and houses changed through the revolution and the children loved exploring the homes and talking to the people living there. Some shops let us watch how they made food in those days and we even managed to see how sweets were made – they tasted delicious.

We loved taking part in lesson from the late 1800s to the early 1900s but did find the teacher a bit tougher than we are use in school. The pens were very different and the money was extremely confusing too but we had a great time nonetheless.

As a final treat, some of us used the local bus service to get back to our coach. It was very strange because there was no door and it had a person stood directing people at each stop.

Year 6 spent the day experiencing life of years gone by. They loved every second of exploring the 1900s Town and seeing how families lived and worked in the years leading up to the First World War.

We went further back in time and experienced life during the industrial revolution which was our history topic for the first half term in autumn. We learned how it affected the local are in the following decade. Generations of families worked down the North East’s pits – it was the industry on which the region’s prosperity was built.
