Sea Shanties & Saltburn Smugglers : A Musical Voyage at Norton Primary Academy
Pupils at Norton Primary Academy enjoyed a day to remember when a lively sea shanty musical group dropped anchor at the school for a full day of workshops, stories, and song.
Led by the energetic Captain Keith and his trusty shipmate Kate, the visiting performers transformed the school hall into a ship’s deck, taking children on a musical voyage along Britain’s coastline. From the youngest sailors in Reception to the experienced crew of Year 6, every pupil had the chance to take part in the exciting sessions throughout the day.
The workshops introduced children to the rich tradition of sea shanties – the rhythmic songs once sung by sailors as they worked aboard ships. Pupils quickly learned how these songs helped crews keep time while hauling ropes and raising sails, and they enthusiastically joined in with the catchy choruses and booming calls.
But the adventure didn’t stop with singing. Captain Keith and Kate also shared fascinating tales from maritime history, including stories of smuggling along the north-east coast. Pupils discovered how smugglers secretly moved goods along hidden coves and rugged shores, often under the cover of darkness.
Adding a touch of mystery and excitement, the children also heard about the legendary Kraken, the enormous sea creature said to lurk beneath the waves. Gasps and laughter filled the room as pupils imagined the giant tentacles rising from the sea to challenge passing ships.
Throughout the day, classrooms echoed with music, rhythm, and plenty of enthusiastic voices as pupils practiced their shanties and learned new musical skills. The workshops built up to a fantastic whole-school performance, where every class came together to sing the songs they had learned.
With booming choruses, clapping rhythms, and big smiles all around, the final performance was the perfect way to celebrate a day full of music, storytelling, and seaside adventure.
By the time Captain Keith and Kate set sail again, the children of Norton Primary Academy had truly embraced the spirit of the sea – proving that a day of singing, history, and imagination can make waves across the whole school.
